Examples Semester 1 DAIJ

Description:

·      The label is where I find the written description about the artwork.

·      The picture is called “Time Transfixed” and it is by Rene Magritte.

·      The work was created in Belgium in 1938.

·      The work was created using the elements shape, color, and space.

·      The tools used by Rene Magritte were oil on canvas.

·      In this work of art I see a mirror, a fire place, train, candle sticks, a clock, and they are in a dining room.

Analyze:

·      The work is constructed by color because the dull color makes the train coming out of the fireplace look normal.  Dull color = dark value.  We also will learn vocabulary like low key colors and tinting (adding white to a color) or shading (adding black to a color)  Magritte definitely shaded his colors. J

·      The artwork has repetition lines with the floorboards’ shapes. Another similarity is the color tone through out the picture and the distinct shapes.

·      The point of emphasis on the work is the train.

·      There is no personal relationship in this picture. The train is coming out of the fireplace, underneath the clock, next to the two candlesticks.

 Interpret:

·      This artwork makes me feel sleepy because of the dull colors .The colors used are not bright , they are brown, green, and black.

·      This work reminds me of the movie Casper The Friendly Ghost, because there is a scene when a ghost is eating and the food is going through him. The train looks ghostly, coming through the wall, and the floors and walls also look like they are from the movie. J  Try to consider academic sources from your other studies but I am personally enjoying this unusual reference.

·      The work relates to the Holocaust because it was made during 1938, and that is when German prisoners were being transported , by train, to concentration camps.

Judgment:

·      I believe this artwork is a success because it grabs my attention and every time I look at it, I notice something different. J

·  This picture is like the “Mona Lisa”, by Leonardo da Vinci, because they both contain dull colors and they both have realistic shapes.

·      I would like the viewer to focus on the fact that it is 9 o’clock in the picture.

·      The surrealist artwork is original because Rene is very plain, uses dull colors , and his artwork contains simple objects, unlike his fellow surrealists.
